The Motley Bauhaus is a versatile and unique art, craft and performance house in the heart of North Fitzroy. With several gallery spaces, a workshop area, intimate theatre, bar, working artist studios and a podcast and recording booth they provide a meeting place for artists, art lovers and lovers of artists.

The name was taken from the Staatliches Bauhaus school opened in Germany in 1919 which combined art and craft and respected them equally. Similar to the original Bauhaus they are founded on the idea that artist and society work best when they work together. In that vein, they provide an inclusive space focused on promoting skills based arts practices and fostering creativity in the community.

The gallery is open during the day for people to wander through and look at the various exhibitions they play host to. In the evening, there are a variety of events from Gamehaus to Arthaus, to The Motley Mystery VHS Movie Night and The P Word Sessions… all focused on giving people the opportunity to get involved, have a drink and have some art related fun times.

Meanwhile, the intimate theatrette plays host to a variety of performances; from live music to indi theatre, comedy to cabaret: a night at the Motley might just tickle your fancy.

The bar offers $7 wine and beer as well as a variety of home made cordials which they use to make utterly unique and magnificent cocktails… so that’s pretty great too.
