Sydney Festival – The Madness Returns!

By Charlie Ranger

Sydney Festival is gonna rock out with its socks out from 7-26 of Jan 2016. Fact.
If you’re the sort of person who never knows ‘where to go’ at the start of a new year then this festival has you covered.

Around 370 performances and 100 events performed by over 700 artists in more than 30 venues means there’ll be some plenty of arty types doing what they do best, which is of course, arty thingamajigs.

From burlesque circus to Chicago rap to Dutch theatre; from contemporary dance to family programs to traditional Indigenous arts practice. This festival has it all and is designed to appeal to all.

Having first taken place in 1977, the Sydney Festival has grown into one of Australia’s largest cultural celebrations. A celebration of Sydney, its style and energy, it’s also got an impressive CV of international talent over its 38 year history including: Phillip Glass, Ariane Mnouchkine, Sir Ian McKellen and Peter Sellars to name but a few.
2016’s festival includes some big names of its own with Björk, Cate Blanchett, Ralph Fiennes and Elvis Costello in attendance.

With events (both priced and free) happening all around Sydney, it’s easy to find something that takes your interest. Even if nothing in the program strikes you, pick a dark horse and give it a try. The worst that can happen is that it’s a terrible show that you really don’t enjoy and become hugely upset that you spent your time seeing it, before crying yourself to sleep at just how truly horrible it was. That’s not so bad is it?

So grab a couple of friends, or people that you’re supposed to like, and dive headlong into the festival in the beautiful New Year. That’s where it’s at, that’s ‘where to go’.
